LIMA Announces 2018 International Licensing Awards Nominees

LIMA has finalized the ballot for the 2018 International Licensing Awards! A total of 132 nominees from 16 countries were named and will vie for the industry’s most prestigious and globally-recognized honor. A record 42% of this year’s nominees originate from outside the U.S. – up from 25 percent from last year – demonstrating the increasing international reach of the awards program.

“This is a banner year for the LIMA Licensing Awards program. We received a record 700 submissions, which truly reflects the broad scope of licensing from around the world,” said LIMA President Charles Riotto. “The prestige – not to mention the sense of competition – is greater than ever and we are excited to see it all play out at the Awards Ceremony at Licensing Expo.”

Voting will be open to all LIMA member companies in April. Winners will be announced at the LIMA Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 22, during Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

Turner Asia’s Tuzki Heads to Six Flags

Six Flags Zhejiang and Six Flags Chongqing will showcase rabbit character across rides, merchandise and more.

ASIA–Six Flags Entertainment, Riverside Investment Group and Turner Asia Pacific have joined forces to launch a series of original, branded experiences at Six Flags parks throughout China.

To kick off the partnership, Six Flags Zhejiang and Six Flags Chongqing will open a new Tuzki-branded ride in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Furthermore, both parks will open retail locations with Tuzki-branded merchandise as well as showcase Tuzki theming.

“We are honored to join forces with these two best-in-class companies to bring memorable, one-of-a-kind entertainment offerings to China,” says Ricky Ow, president, Turner Asia Pacific. “This is the first time that Tuzki’s loyal fans will be able to really experience their favorite emoticon in such a tangible and authentic way. Together with our partners, Six Flags and Riverside Investment Group, we are excited to offer this immersive, new attraction to park guests.”

Additionally, the partnership will allow for other Turner-owned IP (such as Cartoon Network characters) to be showcased at Six Flags Kids World, which will be built adjacent to Six Flags Zhejiang and Six Flags Chongqing.

Disney Deals for Incredibles 2 Jewelry

Alex Woo will release a new accessories collection based on the upcoming Disney/Pixar film.

NORTH AMERICA–Disney Consumer Products has joined forces with Alex Woo for a new jewelry collection inspired by the upcoming film Incredibles 2, in U.S. theaters June 15.

The accessory line will feature four styles including the Incredibles icon, a power burst icon, mini addition mask and powermom.

The Incredibles 2 collection will debut this May.

Bloomsbury to Publish ‘The Deep’ Titles

Technicolor and CPLG have tapped the publishing house to introduce new handbooks, coloring books and more based on the animated series.

GLOBAL–Technicolor Animation & Games has selected Bloomsbury Publishing to create a series of books based on its animated series “The Deep.”

CPLG, the brand’s licensing agent, brokered the deal.

The agreement will see Bloomsbury publish a range of books based on the “The Deep” including young fiction, official handbooks and activity books with new storylines not seen on the series.

“Bloomsbury Children’s Publishing is a global market leader, and we are excited that their passion for ‘The Deep’ will provide children worldwide with a diverse range of books, featuring the vivid world and characters they have grown to love,’ says Pam Kunick-Cohen, head, brand management, licensing and merchandising, Technicolor.

“The Deep” follows a family of underwater explorers as they journey around the world. The series’ second season is currently available around the world on platforms including CBBC in the U.K. and Netflix.

Mojostar to launch Jacqueline Fernandez’s fashion brand after Tiger Shroff’s PROWL

Working on Tiger Shroff’s activewear brand PROWL and the launch of Jacqueline Fernandez’s fashion brand next month, Mojostar plans to redefine the way celebrity retail brands are marketed in India. In a chat with Moneycontrol, Abhishek Verma, CEO, Mojostar talks how the organised fashion sector is growing in the country. With his previous experience as head of Myntra Fashion Brands, Verma also talks about the involvement of celebrities in creating these brands.

Tell us about the fashion market in India?

The fashion market in India is valued at about Rs 75 billion to Rs 80 billion and while estimates may vary only about 20%-25% is organised. Out of this the overall online fashion market is only 5%. That is the space we are trying to develop. Growth indices suggest we have a lot to do in the segment and the fashion market is growing in double digits. Three to four years down the lime the market is expected to touch 100 billion dollars and if all goes the way it is at present one third of the market should be organised which would give a lot of scope for new brands in the fashion segment to make the most of the organised market and its growing popularity.

Which celebrity brands are you working with this season?

Mojostar aims to create a portfolio of 3-4 celebrity brands in lifestyle space, with each brand creating value upwards of $100 million over the next five years. We have already finalised Jacqueline Fernandez and Tiger Shroff for its first set of celebrity brands. Though initially the focus will be primarily online, we plan to retail our product in an omni-channel manner.

How does Mojostar function? How exactly do you assist the celebrities when they launch their own brands?

We partner with top celebrities to co-create authentic, high- impact indigenous brands in the lifestyle space. With three celebrity-driven brands lined up for launch in 2018, Mojostar envisions building a world-class ‘house of brands’ which leverages the power, draw, and allure of celebrities to provide enriching brand experiences to fans. We identify high potential consumer white spaces in the lifestyle market and match them with celebritie. Being consumer backed and not celebrity forward in its approach, makes Mojostar different from other players. Mojostar backs this approach with a strong in-house capability of design, product development and supply chain.

 

You have prior experience of working in Myntra where we have seen Hrithik launching HRX and Deepika launching ‘All about you’. How involved are these celebs in the brand they create?

The celebrities have a four stage involvement with their brand. First they decide what the brand would communicate and what the brand philosophy is then they do the direction setting in regards to design followed by product strategy in terms of quality etc and finally promoting the brand which is the most important part. The brand has a soul and this soul is represented by the celebrity.

What are your plans for Mojostar?I aim to leverage my experience with functions such as design, sourcing, buying, merchandising, marketing, planning, sales, technology, and product to drive Mojostar’s success. With a view to using tech disruption to reorganize value chains and create new business opportunities, I envision combining the power of celebrities, product excellence, and authentic brand development to create a house of multi-million dollar Indian brands in fashion, fitness, and personal care.

LIMA France Names Executive Staff

The French office of the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) has named its executive staff to oversee local operations. Laurent Taieb will head up the office as Chairman. He will be joined by Vice Chairpersons Marina Narishkin, Director of TF1 Licences; Marie-Laure Marchand, SVP Global Consumer Products at Xilam; and Jerome Le Grand, General Manager Licensing, Retail and E-Commerce at The Walt Disney Company France. Valérie Rolandez-Barrios, Director of Licenses and Partnerships at StudioCanal will serve as Treasurer. Their focus will be to promote licensing in-country, drive awareness of the benefits of licensing as a business model, and encourage the participation of young professionals in the industry.

LIMA France will provide members with the wealth of information and services offered by the global Association – including research, conferences and workshops, online training, networking opportunities and exclusive savings on such tradeshows as Brand Licensing Europe (London) and Licensing Expo (Las Vegas) – as well as enabling French companies to work more closely and foster dialogue with their international counterparts, and creating opportunities for companies looking to do business in France.

UFC Moves into European Markets

The mixed martial arts fitness brand will expand into the U.K. and Ireland for the first time.

EUROPE—UFC Gym, a brand extension of UFC, has unveiled an exclusive 10-year partnership with TD Lifestyle to open more than 100 locations across the U.K. and Eire.

The new locations will exist in three formats (signature, core and class) that will offer members a range of functional fitness classes, group and private MMA training, group fitness, personal and group dynamic performance-based training, plus MMA youth programming.

Additionally, the collaboration will bring UFC Gyms to Europe for the first time and is UFC’s biggest partnership development to date.

Reebok Enlists Wonder Woman Star for Campaign

The Wonder Woman star is set to promote superhero-style wellness with the fitness brand.

NORTH AMERICA—Actor Gal Gadot, most noted for her role in Wonder Woman, is teaming up with Reebok for a new partnership focused on wellness.

Through the partnership, Gadot will work with the company for its “Be More Human” campaign, which will aim to inspire young women to embrace physical, mental and social well-being.

“Working out has always been a big part of my life, especially with having a mother who was a PE teacher, I was exposed to an active lifestyle from an early age,” says Gadot.  “Through fitness, I have found that I gain strength, endurance and confidence, and I couldn’t imagine a better partner than Reebok to join me on this journey.”

Nintendo Extends Play with Jakks

NORTH AMERICAWorld of Nintendo has extended its global master toy agreement with Jakks Pacific.

Under the terms of the worldwide agreement, Jakks will continue to manufacture, market and distribute play sets, plush, vehicles, role play, and dress up toys, as well as novelties, blasters and outdoor seasonal items that feature properties including “Super Mario,” “Mario Kart” and “The Legend of Zelda.”

Furthermore, Jakks is slated to launch a host of World of Nintendo items this year including Squish-Dee-Lish squishy toys; Super wind up toys, a line of figures with unique movements inspired by popular heroes and villains; Mario Kart motorcycle RC racer, a remote-controlled motorcycle; and Luigi Mario Kart mini RC racer.

MLB Games to Stream on YouTube, Facebook

The popular U.S. sport will see its games aired on YouTube TV and Facebook throughout the 2018 season.

NORTH AMERICA–Major League Baseball is growing its digital presence with a new deal with Facebook and an expanded partnership with YouTube.

Through an extended agreement, YouTube TV will serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2018 and 2019 MLB World Series. In addition, the two companies will partner for “First Pitch,” a season-long slate of sponsored content that will air during the first pitches of games on MLB Network and MLB.tv. Additionally, YouTube TV will incorporate MLB players in its promotional efforts, produce a number of national TV spots and on-air call outs during games as well as branded content across social media. The partnership also offers expanded baseball coverage to all YouTube TV members with the addition of the MLB Network to the platform’s channel lineup. In the future, YouTube TV members will also be able to add MLB.tv for an additional fee.

MLB and YouTube first partnered at the start of the 2017 Postseason to increase awareness of the streaming service.

In a separate deal, tech giant Facebook has secured the exclusive streaming rights to 25 MLB games during the 2018 season. The deal is the first time a major U.S. sports league has granted exclusive rights to the social network and the greatest amount of rights from a major league sport to go exclusively to a streaming video platform.

Last season, MLB and Facebook partnered to live-stream 20 non-exclusive Friday night games.
