Epic Games and DC Comics have partnered to bring Batman to battle royale game “Fortnite.”
The collaboration sees Gotham City become a point-of-interest on the Fortnite map. Players will be able to skin their character as the Caped Crusader (in both classic and Dark Knight versions) and take on challenges to earn in-game rewards inspired by Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego.
The partnership comes during Batman’s 80th anniversary celebration and shortly after the honorific date of Batman Day. DC’s multi-platform property has been part of a far-reaching licensing campaign to honor the Dark Knight’s 80 years of action in 2019.
“It’s the 80th anniversary of the Dark Knight, and we wanted to do something extra special for fans all around the world for Batman Day,” says Jim Lee, chief creative officer and publisher, DC, in an interview with Comicbook.com. “I can’t imagine anything bigger than letting the legions of ‘Fortnite’ players take on the cowl and enter the world of Gotham City via Tilted Towers! Epic Games has really outdone themselves in bringing the world of Batman to battle royale.”
Epic Games will debut two Batman-themed character skins on Oct. 6. Special in-game items from the collaboration will also include the Catwing Glider. To compete for rewards, players will visit a Rift Zone based on Gotham and face off against various henchman from the Batman universe. Challenges will be playable starting Oct. 1.
The Batman x “Fortnite” crossover continues Epic’s push to bring new content to its free-to-play title. Earlier this year, the company debuted a collaboration with Netflix’s “Stranger Things” that brought the Upside Down to the game’s world.
Mattel has extended its global licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to continue to be the toy licensee for DC in the girls, preschool, vehicles, games and novelty toy categories.
The agreement grows Mattel’s existing DC Universe franchises with new content for the “DC Super Hero Girls” property. Mattel has worked closely with DC as a partner for more than 15 years.
“DC is home to some of the world’s greatest super heroes, and extending our partnership will ensure we’re able to support the growth of this iconic brand and bring it to even more audiences,” says Janet Hsu, chief franchise management officer, Mattel. “Mattel is known for its winning design and innovation and, as the category leaders in dolls, vehicles and preschool, we’re thrilled to support Warner Bros. long-term franchise plans.”
Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Six Flags Entertainment Corporation have inked a deal to bring DC to Northern California’s Discovery Kingdom in 2019.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s new themed area will include new rides and attractions inspired by DC’s backlog of characters. The park will add locations for characters such as Batman, The Flash, Wonder Women, Superman, and a rogues’ gallery of universe villains.
“We take great pride in bringing our guests innovative, new experiences every season,” says Don McCoy, park president, Six Flags Magic Kingdom. “DC Universe is the biggest park expansion in recent decades. This newly branded area brings together DC’s most iconic Super Heroes and Super-Villains for a thrilling, one-of-a-kind experience.
The DC Universe themed area will feature two new rides based on The Flash and Batman. Batman: The Ride will be Northern California’s first 4D free fly roller coaster while the Flash: Vertical Velocity will be a high-speed launch coaster. New rides will join other DC-branded attractions based on the Penguin, Joker and Harley Quinn. Six Flags’ new deal comes during Batman’s 80th anniversary. DC will be honoring the caped crusader’s milestone with a celebration on Sept. 21.
